775,567. Contacting gases with liquid. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 2, 1955 [March 4, 1954], No. 6349/54. Class 55 (2). A gas-liquid contact apparatus comprising a series of superimposed trays 2, Fig. 2, having downcomers 5 for passing liquid from one tray to the next below and vapour risers (not shown), has the edges of each tray 2 spaced from the walls 1 of the containing vessel and provided with a continuous upstanding member 3 which co-operates with an inwardly projecting downwardly disposed continuous member 6 attached to the walls 1 to form a space into which liquid passes and forms a seal. Each tray comprises two halves, each of which has an integral upstanding member 3, an outlet weir 4 and downcomer ducts 5. The member 6 is welded to walls 1 and over a portion of its length has an upstanding portion 10, Fig. 1, to form a trough 11 into which liquid is delivered from the tray above by ducts 5 or, in the case of the top tray, by feed pipes 12. A central member 9 of inverted U-section is welded to member 6 at its ends and the trays 2 are suspended from members 6 and 9 by bolts engaging brackets on the members and screwing into ferrules on the trays. Each half-tray is positioned by lowering in a substantially vertical position, turning to a horizontal position below the corresponding members 6, 9, and raising to be attached to the latter.
