Abstract

829,894. Contacting gases with liquids. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V., DE. Dec. 24, 1957 [Dec. 29, 1956], No. 40008/57. Class 55 (2). A distillation column has one or more trays having liquid flow channels 10 (Fig. 1) between oblong bubble caps 24 arranged in a number of sections 2, 3, 4 with the channels discharging into transverse troughs 5, 6, 7, the or each tray being arranged so that liquid flowing across it in operation passes in succession either across each of the sections in turn or across each section in a group when, as shown, the sections are arranged in groups. The central trough 7 has liquid downcomers 11 and the sections of each group have their upper surfaces at decreasing heights in the order in which liquid flows across them in operation. Weir plates, which may be adjustable, are provided at the liquid inlet end of each section and at the liquid outlet end of the sections 4 adjacent the central trough 7. Each of the sections 2, 3, 4 comprises a sheet-metal support member providing a raised platform (Fig. 3) on which the bubble caps 24 are mounted over gas risers as shown, each support member having flanges which form the transverse troughs 5, 6, 7.
