Abstract

803,177. Separating dust from gases. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. June 26, 1957 [July 6, 1956] No. 21005/56. Class 8(2). Agglomeration of fine gas-borne ferro-magnetic particles prior to their separation by conventional means is effected in a chamber 10 having a particle-laden gas inlet duct 11 and a chamber 17 to which is injected a suspension of magnetic powder in a compressed carrier gas, e.g., air, nitrogen or argon ; the temperature of the gas borne ferromagnetic particles being below that at which their magnetic properties are lost, e.g., 250‹C. In separation relatively coarse ferric oxide or ferro-magnetic powder is supplied from a hopper 12 by a screw 16 into a nozzle 15 through which it is induced by the carrier gas issuing from a nozzle 18 into the chamber 17, and after deflection at a baffle 21 becomes intimately mixed with the fine particles to be agglomerated ; the powder being given a controlled amount of residual magnetism by a D.C. coil 19 surrounding the screw 16 and by an A.C. demagnetizing coil 20 adjacent the nozzle 15.
