Abstract
Processing of LD slag (from oxysteel prodn.) is carried out by (a) heating a mixt. of the slag, carbon and a Al2O3 and SiO2-contg. flux to reduce the metal oxides in the slag, and (b) cooling the mixt. to 200 degrees C and separating Fe from the resulting fine powder. The amt. of flux added is such that the CaO/Al2O3/SiO2 compsn. (wt.%) falls within a zone in the phase diagram (at 1350 degrees C) defined by the points (1) 55/3/42, (2) 60/28/12, (3) 70/4/26. On cooling, the mixt. disintegrates spontaneously into fine slag particles and relatively, coarse Fe particles, which are easily sepd. by magnetic sepn. or air sifting. The residual slag slag particles can be reacted with lime to produce Portland cement.
