Abstract

The molecular weight of linear polyamides derived from dibasic acids and diamines is increased by heating polyamides, having a relative viscosity of from 20 to 100 and an end group balance of from - 10 to + 10 microequivalents, below their melting-point, until the relative viscosity is increased by at least 50 to a value of more than 100. The end group balance is expressed in terms of microequivalents of end groups per gram of polyamide. The preferred polyamide is polyhexamethylene adipamide and the reaction is preferably carried out in the absence of oxygen. The products of the invention may be used in the manufacture of bars, rods, tubes and bottles.
