Abstract

Polyamides are modified by heating in an inert medium at a temperature below its melting point a polyamide made in the fused state from (a) a linear polyamide-forming compound and (b) 0,5 to 5% by weight, with reference to the whole polyamide-forming mixture of a dilactam which contains a hydrogen atom attached to nitrogen in each of the lactam groups. Specified polyamide forming compounds are caprolactam, oenanthic lactam, caprylic lactam, lauric lactam, 4-isopropyl caprolactam, 3-methyl caprolactam, hexamethylene diammonium adipate, octamethylene diammonium sebacate, hexamethylene diammonium terephthalate, omega-aminocaproic acid and omega-aminoundecanoic acid. Preferred dilactams are defined. The examples describe the preparation and aftertreatment of polyamides from:- (1) caprolactam, hexamethylene diammonium adipate and methylene-bis-cyclohexanone-oxime; (2) caprolactam and methylene-bis-cyclohexanone-oxime; (3) caprylic lactam, hexamethylene diammonium terephthalate and methylene-bis-caprolactam; (4) hexamethylene diammonium adipate and methylene-bis-caprolactam and (5) caprolactam and methylene-bis-caprolactam. Specification 824,207 is referred to.
