Abstract

In a process for the polymerization of monomeric cyclic lactams, one or more gas tight capsules made of solid, monomeric polyamide-forming lactams, solid polyamides derived from said lactams and solid polyamides derived from diamines and dicarboxylic acids, said capsules each containing an initiator for the polymerization of polyamide-forming lactams and having a substantially oxygen and moisture free atmosphere above said initiator, said initiator being inert to the material of the capsule at ordinary temperatures, are added to the lactam to be polymerized. Specified initiators are sodium hydroxide, sodium methoxide, potassium-t-butoxide, lithium butyl, lithium aluminium tetra-ethyl, lithium aluminium tetra butyl, lithium aluminium hydride, lithium diethoxyalumino hydride and lithium tri-(t-butoxy)-alumino-hydride. The example describes the manufacture of a caprolactam capsule containing potassium-t-butoxide under nitrogen, and the addition thereof to molten caprolactam which is polymerized at 230 DEG C.
