Abstract
Polyamides are made by heating a lactam of an omega-aminocarboxylic acid with 8 to 13 ring members and which is substituted on nitrogen by an alkyl group or an alkenyl group containing only one ethylenic double bond, the total number of carbon atoms in said substituent being from one to six at 200 DEG C. to 300 DEG C. in the presence of 0,1%-5% by weight, based on the monomer, of a neutral or acid polymerization catalyst. Specified lactams are N-methyl-oenanthic lactam, N-ethyl-oenanthic lactam, N-methylcaprylic lactam, N-ethyl caprylic lactam, N-methyl lauric lactam and said lactams substituted on the nitrogen atom by propyl, butyl, isobutyl, isoamyl, hexyl, vinyl, allyl, crotryl or methallyl groups. Specified catalysts are phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, hydrobromic acid, hexamethylene diammonium adipate, octamethylene diammonnium sebacate, o -aminocaproic acid and water. The examples describe the preparation of polyamides from: (1), (7) and (8) N-methyl caprylic lactam; (2) and (3) N-ethyl-caprylic lactam; (4) and (5) N-ethyl-oenanthic lactam; (9) N-butyl-caprylic lactam and (10) n-butyl-oenanthic lactam; exemplified catalysts being phosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, hexamethylene diammonium adipate and water.
