Abstract

1409258 Acrylonitrile / polyamide fibres WOON WAI TSE 15 Nov 1972 52795/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Filaments or fibres are spun from a solution of a polymer composition which comprises an acrylonitrile polymer or copolymer containing at least 70% by weight of acrylonitrile units in admixture with an aromatic polyamide containing recurring units of the formula where Ar 1 and Ar 2 are the same or different, substituted or unsubstituted, divalent aromatic radicals. The acrylonitrile polymer may contain comonomer units such as units of vinyl acetate, methylacrylate, vinylpyridine and ethylenesulphonic acid. The polyamide preferably consists entirely of the units of the above formula and may be, for example, poly-m-phenylene isophthalamide. The solvent for the spinning solution may be, for example, dimethylformamide and a solubility promoter such as lithium chloride may optionally also be present. After spinning, the filaments or fibres are suitably submitted to washing, drawing and heat setting processes. Drawing is preferably effected to at least 2 times the original length in a steam, hot water or other hot atmosphere, or in contact with a heated surface.
