Abstract

High molecular weight polyterephthalamides melting below 300 DEG C. are made by heating under normal or increased pressure a mixture of one or more linear aliphatic diamines having from 4 to 12 carbon atoms with dimethyl terephthalate sufficiently quickly that a melt is formed in not more than one hour, and maintaining the pressure at least high enough to keep the reagents liquid, the last stage of the polycondensation being effected under reduced pressure. Specified aliphatic diamines are hexamethylene, heptamethylene, decamethylene and octamethylene diamines. In the examples, dimethyl terephthalate is heated in the presence of nitrogen with: (1) decamethylene diamine at 280 DEG C., at or about atmospheric pressure and then at a pressure of 2 mm. of mercury; (2) octamethylene diamine at 300 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and then at a pressure of 0.5 mm.; (3) heptamethylene diamine at 270 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and then at a pressure of 0.5 mm. The products may be melt spun into fibres. Specification 461,237, [Group IV], is referred to.
