Abstract

Lauric lactam is polymerized in the presence of an acid of phosphorus or a compound which forms an acid of phosphorus under the polymerization conditions as catalyst. Catalysts specified are: phosphoric, phosphorous, hypophosphoric and pyrophosphoric acids, and mono-, di- and tri-ammonium phosphates. 0.01-3% may be used. The reaction may be carried out also in the presence of water and a material which modifies the molecular weight of the product, e.g. stearic, adipic or sebacic acid. An inert atmosphere, e.g. N2 or CO2, of atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure and a reaction temperature of 280-300 DEG C. may be used. Less than 1% of the product may be extracted with methanol. The product may be injection moulded into tubes or bottles or made into fibres.
