Abstract
Diphenylamine is produced by heating aniline to a temperature above 280 DEG C. under a pressure of at least 6 atmospheres, and with the removal of ammonia split off, in the presence, as catalyst, of a halogen and an oxygen-containing compound of phosphorus. The pressure under which the reaction is carried out may be due entirely to the ammonia liberated by the reaction or may be augmented by a pressurized inert gas. Specified oxygen-containing compounds of phosphorus are phosphorus trioxide, phosphorus pentoxide, phosphorous acid, phosphonic acid and boron phosphate. Both the halogen and phosphorus compound may be used in an amount between 0.1 and 0.5% by weight, based on the aniline used, and the weight for weight ratio bewteen the halogen and phosphorus compound is preferably bewteen 1:0.5 and 1:2.
