A belt-driven reversing gearing comprises fast and loose pulleys 10, 20 mounted on a shaft 12, differential gearing 22, 32, 16 between the pulleys and releasable means 42 for holding stationary the planet carrier 30 of the differential gearing. The loose pulley 20 carrying the bevel gear 22 is freely rotatable on a sleeve 18 rigid with the planet carrier 30 and having a brakedrum 34 with inclined faces 36. The brake member 42 comprises two substantially semicircular members having friction linings, the members being hinged at one side and clampable on the drum 34 by a screw and nut at the other side. The arrangement provides forward drive with the belt or pulley 10, idling with the belt on pulley 20, and reverse with the belt on pulley 20 and the brake engaged.
