802,056. Magnetic brakes. ELEKTROMECHANIK G.m.b.H. July 20, 1956 [July 21, 1955; April 19, 1956], No. 22525/56. Class 35. A magnetic powder brake intended to be used with its rotary axis horizontal and comprising a radially outer stationary cylindrical housing 10 surrounding an inner rotor 11 forming a working gap 14 with the housing wall, an energizing winding 13 carried either by the rotor or the housing, and a magnetizable powder 15 to fill the gap, has at the bottom of the housing a recess which widens the gap and is dimensioned to accommodate substantially all the powder when the brake is de-energized. The hole forming the recess is closed by a cover 16 which as shown, may be extended downwards to so increase the capacity of the recess that it holds a multiple of the quantity of powder required to fill the gap 14. A plate 17 spaced from the cover 16 by a gap 19 may be provided to ensure circulation of the powder. There may be two or more recesses and they may be filled at least partially with a fluid coolant, preferably water. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 649,553.
