Abstract

PURPOSE:To get a shaft seal available under a wide range of sealing conditions, by flling a converx clearance between stationary and rotary members with magnetic fluid, while setting a permanent magnet to the rotary member and an electromagnet to the extenal circumference above the clearance. CONSTITUTION:An annular permanent magnet 5, fixed to a rotary shaft 1 through a non-magnetic substance 6, is put in an annular space between two annular magnetic substances 3 to form a convex clearance 7. This clearance is filled with magnetic fluid 8 around its top, while an electromagnet 9 is set between a partition wall 4 and the internal wall 2a of a casing 2. If high shaft sealing performance is required, the electromagnet 9 is energized. The interaction between the electromagnet 9 and permanent magnet 5 then preduces a magnetic field counterclockwise and the magnetic force working on the magnetic fluid 8 exceeds that produced by the permanent magnet 5 alone. This converges the magnetic fluid 8 around the permanent magnet 5 to improve the sealing performance.
