A method of bending a tube comprises, first, bending the tube in a direction opposite that of the final bend, then bending the thus bent tube back in a direction opposite the first bend and then applying pressure to the inside of the thus partly-formed bend to move the tube between two spaced members to cause the limbs of the tube to move towards one another to form the final bend. A tube 1, preferably heated over the zone 5 to form the inside of the first bend, is bent over a former 2 so that the inside wall 3 becomes thickened. The thus bent tube is then bent back in the opposite direction, over a bending sheave 6 to form an angle of about 110 to 120 degrees. The inner wall 7 is thus thickened. An internal tube support 8 may be used. The bending sheave 6 has a semi-oval groove 6<SP>1</SP> to allow the thickened part 7 of the tube to move into the base thereof. After applying rapid heat to the inner region o, x, y, the legs of the bend are closed parallel to one another by movement of pivoted guide blocks 14, 15 together, and then by a suitably shaped member 18 which pushes the tube between the pivoted guide blocks 14, 15 and rollers 11, 12. Cooling liquid is supplied to the outer part of the elbow during this latter operation. The bent tube may then be formed in a die.
