Abstract
801,323. Microwave directional couplers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Aug. 23, 1956 [Jan. 5, 1956], No. 416/56. Class 40 (8). A directional coupler comprises two waveguides or coaxial lines crossing each other at an angle chosen for maximum directivity and coupled by a single hole which is filled with a dielectric body. The outer conductors 3 of the coaxial lines 4 are shaped to provide an increased wall thickness in the region of the coupling. Where the lines cross they are cut away to provide mating flat surfaces and one of them is provided with flanges 12 for securing pins. The coupling hole is of greater diameter than the inside diameter of the coaxial lines and is filled with a cylindrical dielectric body 7 provided on its end surfaces with grooves for the reception of the inner conductors 1. The junction is matched by cutting away part of the inner conductors 1 where they cross the dielectric body 7. The matching may be adjusted by means of screws 11. The dielectric body may completely fill the interior of the two lines.
