Abstract
801,173. Washing gases. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J. Feb. 1, 1956 [Feb. 2, 1955], No. 3038/55. Class 55 (2). In a gas washer, a froth chamber 16 is divided above the level of the liquid by a floor 19 which supports a number of conduits formed of vertical plates 21. The bottoms 24 of these plates are notched and dip below the liquid whilst V- section plates 25 cover the open tops and prevent liquid from being carried out with the cleaned gas. As shown in Fig. 1, the gas, entering at 12, is preliminarily scrubbed by the spray drums 14 of Specification 801,172, and passes through spaces 28 at the sides of the chamber 16, to the spaces 29 between the floor 19 and the level of the liquid, and, from thence, under the lower edges of the plates 21 to the upper chamber. The gas outlets 26 are provided with filters if necessary. A scraper convery 19 moves sludge through an airtight tank to the valve 33. A level switch and an adjustable overflow pipe maintain the liquid at a predetermined level. In a modification, the spray drum stage is omitted, and the gas is admitted directly to a central space 28 flanked by froth chambers which discharge into a common gas outlet chamber. The sludge may be removed by a sludge pump towards which the sludge is scraped by a conveyer. Specification 636,120, [Group XXVIII], also is referred to.
