Abstract
722,662. Treating gases with liquids. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Jan. 19, 1953, [Jan. 26, 1952.] No. 1508/53. Class 55 (2). A counter-current stage-wise spray washer apparatus comprises a shell 12 with gas inlet and outlet 17, 18, and liquid inlet and outlet 20, 22, and in each stage of gas distribution, scrubbing and outlet chambers 33, 35, 34, with a slotted partition shown as a cylinder 39 between the first two chambers and a ported partition 42 also shown as a cylinder between the second and third through orifices 43, of which nozzles 26 in the outlet chamber direct a fine spray into and across the scrubbing chamber against partition 39, liquid being deflected away from the slots 40 by overlying baffles. In passing through orifices 43 the gas encounters at highest velocity the more closely spaced globules of spray before rising into a de-entrainment space 32 in which, by means of co-axial cylindrical partitions 44, 45, sudden changes in direction of flow are produced. Liquid depositing in this zone descends an overflow pipe 52 to a pool 51 in the scrubbing chamber where it is pumped from a well 48 back to the spray nozzles. Overflow from stage to stage is effected by discharge over weirs 50 provided by the base of the slots 40 onto the floor of the de-entrainment zone below. From the uppermost stage the gas traverses a mist eliminator 30 on its way to the outlet 18. The apparatus may be used to scrub benzol from coke oven gas or as a washer for removing ammonia, naphthalene &c. or for stripping liquid by means of gas as a primary or final cooler, Specification 721,812 is referred to.
