A portable conveyer loader mounted for fore-and-aft movement with respect to a pile of loose material 71 has a pair of rotatable toothed wheels 25, 26 mounted at its forward end which are driven in a direction 58 such as to burrow into the pile of material and move the overlying material backwards so that it falls on the conveyer. The conveyer is an endless scraper chain conveyer comprising a central chain 32 having lateral flights 33 the top edges 35 of which are bent forwardly. The chain 32 passes over an upper sprocket 24 driven by chain gearing 49, 50 from a motor 42 and a lower sprocket mounted on the toothed-wheel shaft 21. The motor 42 is slung beneath the conveyer frame by straps 44 which are hung on sleeves 43 mounted on pins 45 engaged in brackets on the frame. The pins 45 also hold in place a cover 46. The scraper chain runs in upper and lower troughs, the upper trough having flared sides 38 the top edges 36 of which are bent inwardly. The sides 38 are strengthened by gusset plates 29, 37, the latter having apertures for facilitating handling. The conveyer framework is slung by a pair of cables 52 from an overhead trolley 53 which runs on a longitudinal rail 54. Rail 54 is carried by suspension members 55, which preferably allow transverse movement of the rail 54, from supporting beams 56. In an alternative construction, Fig. 9, the conveyer framework is carried by a tricycle carriage comprising a longitudinal member extending between an axle for a pair of wheels 63 and a transverse rod 67 on which is mounted a castor wheel 70, and a yoke member 62 pivoted to the axle, slotted brackets 64, 65 on the conveyer framework engaging the yoke member and rod 67 respectively. Instead of a pair of toothed wheels a toothed drum may be used. The toothed wheels or drum may be carried on a shaft located in advance of the lower conveyer chain sprocket and be coupled with the latter by chain gearing.
