Material is unloaded from a rail truck 60 by a bucket elevator 18 which is pivotally mounted at 34 to a boom 32 for vertical swinging, the boom 32 being in turn pivoted at 33 for vertical swinging relative to a main framework carried by a turntable 16 mounted on the chassis 10 of a road vehicle. A conveyer belt 42 is mounted in the boom 32 to receive the material from the elevator 18 and transfer it to a discharge belt conveyer 44 pivoted for vertical swinging about a removable pivot pin 45 carried by a turntable 46 mounted on the main framework. Vertical swinging movement of the elevator 18 and of the boom 32 is effected by hydraulic cylinders 40 and 38 respectively which are controlled from a cab 14 on the main framework and are supplied by a pump 36 driven by the Diesel engine of a Diesel generator set 22. The generator of this set supplies power for separate electric motors driving the three conveyers, the turntable 16 and the road wheels 12 of the vehicle. The turntable 46 is operated by cable 68 from a handwheel 50 in the cab. A further hand wheel 58 in the cab operates a winch for a cable 56 trained over a derrick 52 to a pulley block supporting the discharge conveyer 44. The elevator is swung between the full and chain line positions to sweep the truck 60 laterally, and the vehicle is moved to sweep the truck longitudinally. To prevent the buckets of the elevator fouling the floor and sides of the truck 60 a buffer roller 64 and a supporting roller 65 are provided on opposite ends of a two-armed lever 61, 66 pivoted at 67 to the lower end of the elevator. The two-armed lever is normally set in the desired angular position by a stay 76 forming together with the elevator, the arm 61 and a lug 79 fixed to the boom 32 a quadrilateral linkage which compensates for the swinging movements of the elevator. The two-armed lever may, however, be swung upwardly into inverted position or its position modified to suit an irregular floor by operation of a hand wheel 70 acting through a cable 69, a slotted end portion 80 of the stay 76 permitting this movement. A turnbuckle 83 is also provided in the stay 76 to adjust its length to suit different levels of the floors of trucks to be unloaded. The driving cab 14 has two operating positions, one for the road, and an elevated position 61 for unloading so that the operator can see into the truck 60. When the equipment is to be transported, the turntable 16 is rotated to dispose the elevator 18 and boom 32 longitudinally of the vehicle. The pin 45 is then removed and the derrick 52 swung to place the discharge conveyer 44 on a cradle (Fig. 4, not shown) at the side of the vehicle. In order to minimize spillage of material from the buckets of the elevator 18, the material is transferred to the convyer belt 42 by a shoot consisting of a fixed flap 84 secured to the boom 32, and a flap 82 which is hinged to the flap 84 and is provided with rollers 94 engaging in grooved members 96 carried by the frame of the elevator.
