Abstract

801,101. Turbines. FUR TECHNISCHE STUDIEN A.G. Oct. 12, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1954], No. 29114/55. Class 110 (3). A reversible inward radial flow turbine has two axially - adjacent, oppositely - extending spiral inlet chambers, designed to impart relatively reverse swirling motions to working medium fed through them selectively to the turbine rotor, which discharge through annular nozzles into a common annular entrance chamber which encircles the periphery of the rotor. The runner 2 having radial blades 3 is mounted on a shaft 4 supported in a housing 1 by a bearing 5. Working medium supplied through a duct 6 may be guided by a pivoted vane 10 into either of the spiral inlet chambers 8, 9. The chambers 8, 9 discharge through ducts 12, 16 containing guide blades 13, 15 into an annular chamber 14 located before the runner. Since the spiral inlet chambers 8, 9 extend in opposite directions, the external dimensions of the housing 1 remain substantially constant over the whole periphery. In a modification, the inlets of the spiral chambers are arranged tangentially and at 180 degrees to one another. In this arrangement, the guide blades may be omitted. In a further modification, the division wall between the chambers is arranged in a plane perpendicular to the turbine axis and the outer axial boundaries of the housing are then formed as helical surfaces. In this arrangement, the common annular chamber 14 is provided with an axially sliding wedgeshaped member to improve the flow conditions into the turbine.
