Abstract

800,982. Methods of generating steam. BARR, W. J. C. Dec. 20, 1956 [July 16, 1956], No. 21868/56. Classes 123(2) and 123(3) Steam is generated by the combustion of a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen fed to a combustion chamber A through pipes B, C and ignited therein by an electric spark, the resultant high temperature steam being passed to a de-superheating chamber E where water, in pre-determined quantities, is sprayed into it producing a larger volume of steam at a lower temperature which is fed through a pipe M to a series of turbines G, G1, G2. The exhaust steam from the turbines is led through a pipe H and is forced by an injector J into a regenerating chamber K from where it passes to another regenerating chamber L and in both of these chambers it is mixed with high temperature steam either produced bY the combustion therein of further quantities of hydrogen and oxygen or supplied thereto from the combustion chamber A, the latter also supplying steam to the injector J. The regenerated steam passes from the chamber L through a pipe M back to the turbines and provision is made for drawing off a quantity of the exhaust steam which may be used in other steam plant, released into the cooling water or condensed and heated by electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The chambers A. E. K, L which may be of any shape but are preferably spherical, are provided with cooling water jackets supplied with water from a pipe O, the water returning to a pump E2 for injection into the chamber E. Small auxiliary combustion chambers may be connected to chambers A, K, L for use only when small quantities of high temperature steam are required and, if desired, high temperature steam may be fed direct to the turbines from chamber A.
