Abstract

800,747. Controlling variable-speed gearing. KING, Ltd., G. W. March 11, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9557/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXX] On a means for attaining synchronism between two independently driven members, the members are coupled to a common epicyclic gear assembly such that difference in their speed of rotation results in an angular movement of a member of the gear assembly which is coupled to a variable-speed gear incorporated in the drive to one member, thereby varying the drive and synchronizing it with the other member. 10, 11 are two independently-driven conveyer belts, 10 being driven by a motor 13 through the variable-speed gear 14 and a gear-box 15. The drive to 11 is not shown. A gear-wheel 21 on the drive shaft 19 of the conveyer belt 10 is meshed with external teeth on the annulus 22 of an epicyclic gear assembly and the drive-shaft of the conveyer belt 11 is coupled to the sun-wheel 28 by a chain 25. The planet-wheels 29 are freely mounted on a planet carrier 30 which has a chain sprocket 31 secured thereto and connected by a chain 32 to the control shaft 34 of the variable-speed gear 14. If the speed of drive of the members 10, 11 is equal the planet carrier 30 will not rotate. Any variation in speed between the members will cause the planet carrier to rotate and apply a correction to the variable speed gear 14 to synchronize the members. A dashpot 35, 36 prevents hunting. The chain drives may be replaced by gear trains or by drive connection and the link between the planet carrier and the variable-speed gear may be by rack-and-pinion.
