Abstract
High octane motor fuels are produced by separating a catalytic reformate by fractionation into a higher boiling fraction having a relatively higher octane number and a lower boiling fraction having a relatively lower octane number which latter is thermally reformed to increase its octane member and is blended with the high boiling fraction to produce a gasoline having a research clear octane number of at least 90. The higher boiling fraction preferably has an octane number (research) above 100 and the lower boiling fraction after thermal reforming should be such as to produce on blending a final gasoline with an octane number of at least 100. The thermal reforming may be carried out at 538-650 DEG C. and 200-1200 p.s.i.g. The process is particularly suitable for a catalytic reformate produced by reforming a naphtha over a platinum on alumina catalyst. In an example, such a reformate is distilled cutting at 140 DEG C., the high boiling fraction having an octane number of iso - octane + 0.25 ml. TEL/USG (research), and the low boiling fraction of octane number 78.3 was reformed thermally at 750 p.s.i.g. and 571 DEG C. to give a product of constitution in per cent by weight, C3 25, C4 14.5, gasoline 55.5 and polymer 5.0. The gasoline was blended with the high boiling fraction to give a gasoline of octane number iso-octane + 0.03 ml. TEL/USG. Specification 742,769 is referred to.
