Abstract

High octane motor fuels are produced by fractionating a catalytic reformate into a higher and a lower boiling fraction and thermally reforming each, the lower boiling fraction under conditions of greater severity, and blending the products to give a gasoline having a research clear octane number of at least 90. The cut between the two fractions is preferably in the range of 110-150 DEG C. The thermal reforming conditions may be 538-650 DEG C. and 200-1200 p.s.i.g. and are such that the conversion to C3 and lower hydrocarbons on the lower boiling fraction is 20-35 per cent by weight and on the higher boiling fraction is 5-20 per cent by weight. The process is particularly applicable to a reformate obtained by catalytically reforming a naphtha in the presence of a platinum on alumina catalyst. In an example such a reformate is distilled cutting at 130 DEG C.; the higher boiling fraction is reformed at 750 p.s.i.g. and 554 DEG C. to give 7 per cent wt. C3 and lighter and the lower boiling fraction is reformed at 750 p.s.i.g. and 571 DEG C. to give 26 per cent wt. C3 and lighter. The two products when blended give a gasoline of octane number iso-octane + 0.30 ml. TEL/USG (research). Specification 742,769 is referred to.
