Abstract
799,824. Clocks and watches. BULOVA WATCH CO. Inc. Jan, 26. 1955 [Feb. 10, 1954], No. 2397/55. Class 139 [Also in Group XXIV] In ratchet gearing for electronicallydriven clocks and watches a vibrator 3 carries a pawl 5 driving a toothed wheel 1 the arbor 2 of which is braked by frictional engagement with a leaf spring 8 to prevent back-running and over-running. The leaf spring 8 may be replaced by a leaf spring acting on the end face of the arbor 2, by a spring-loaded plug bearing on the face of the wheel 1, or by a forked leaf spring straddling the arbor 2 and bearing on the wheel face through a loose washer. The pawl 5 comprises a resilient strip whose natural frequency is higher than the vibrator frequency. The wheel 1 may be of sawtoothed form (as shown) or may have equal-sided teeth or sinusoidal teeth. The free end of the pawl 5 may be hooked so as to act in tension and may carry a wheelengaging gem or other hard-wearing piece such as glass, hardened steel or sintered metal.
