Abstract

N-maleinyl-p-amino-salicylic acid and the N-maleinyl-aminobenzoic acids are prepared by combining equimolecular solutions of p-aminosalicylic acid or aminobenzoic acid in methanol or dioxane and maleic anhydride in chloroform. The product separates as a solid on standing. Specification 703,878 is referred to.ALSO:A light barrier composition for the protection of the skin comprises N-maleinyl-p-amino-salicylic acid or N-maleinyl-aminobenzoic acid (for preparation see Group IV (b)) or a salt thereof. Anti-histaminic agents, such as a bromobenzyl - a - pyridyl - dimethyl - ethylenediamine or p-bromobenzyl-a -pyridyl-methylethyl - ethylenediamine or m - bromobenzyl-a - pyridyldiethyl - ethylenediamine, and colouring matter, such as ochre, may be present, together with ointment ingredients.
