Abstract
The invention comprises 2,3,7-trihydroxy-1-methyl-8-methylenegibb-4-ene-1,10-dicarboxylic acid 1 --> 3 lactone of the formula <FORM:0919205/IV (b)/1> and salts thereof and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises treatment of gibberellic acid with aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution. The example relates to the preparation of the lactone, the calcium, sodium and ammonium salts and the methyl ester. The lactone and salts are employed as active ingredients in growth promoting compositions (see Group I).ALSO:Plant growth promoting compositions comprise a gibberellic acid derivative, 2, 3, 7-trihydroxy-1-methyl-8-methylenegibb-4-ene-1, 10-dicarboxylic acid 1-->3 lactone of the formula <FORM:0919205/I/1> or a salt thereof (see Group IV(b)) in admixture with diluents or carriers therefor. The compositions may be in the form of powders for direct application, dispersable powders or tablets.
