Abstract

798,409. Centrifugal separators. THERMIX CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1956, No. 38475/56. Class 23 [Also in Group XIII] In an apparatus for separating mist particles from gases the fine mist particles are agglomerated into larger drops in a chamber 12 before the gas is passed through a number of parallel operating centrifugal separators 30. The gas enters through an inlet 13 into the chamber 12, within a gas-tight housing 10 of preferably welded cylindrical construction, and passes through a pad of coiled knitted wire layers 16, Figs. 3 and 4, backed by a supporting grid 17. Some of the liquid particles are here separated from the gas and flow out of a drain 18 but the greater number of them, agglomerated into larger drops, are torn from the pad by the gas and pass with the gas through an opening 19 in a transverse partition 11 into a chamber 20 housing the centrifugal separators 30. Separated liquid is discharged from the centrifugal separators 30 into a chamber 24 having a drain 25 while the gas passes into a chamber 26 leading to an outlet 15 in the housing 10. The pad 16 may be made up of layers of knitted metal wire of small gauge placed one on another or the knitted wire may be made as a strip of the required width rolled into a tight coil. The centrifugal separators 30 are most efficient at high velocities while at low velocities the agglomerating effect of the pad 16 is greater, forming larger drops which are more easily separated; the actions of the pad and the centrifugal separators therefore complement each other for variation in the gas velocity.
