798,330. Feeding webs. SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK FRANKENTHAL ALBERT & CIE AKT.-GES. Aug. 16, 1955 [Aug. 16, 1954]. No. 23531/55. Class 100(1) [Also in Group XL(b)] In order to join the end of a printed web of paper 13 with a new roll the relative speeds of the rolls and web are controlled by means of tachd-generators sensing peripheral speed of the roll and linear speed of the web and photo-cells detecting the relative phase of recurring optical patterns on the web and roll. The tachogenerators 11, 11<SP>1</SP> control a motor 10 which adjusts an infinitely variable gear 18 controlling the speed of drive of the roll 2 by the shaft 8 through belting 8. The photo sensitive arrangements A, B each consist of a light source and a photo-cell receiving light reflected from the edge of the roll and the web. The output pulses produced in the two cells by the reference marks are amplified and used to control the input to a differential 5 from a motor 14, thus slowing or accelerating the drive to the roll 2 until it is in running in phase with the travelling web when the two are brought into contact.
