In a portable stacking hoist having a platform n1 guided along vertical channels P, retractible castor wheels b1, b2 are retained in their retracted position by means which are freed only when the platform n is in its lowest position. The castor brackets cl, c2 are secured to a shaft d which is rotated to retract or extend the castors by a lever h and link f. When the platform is raised a lever i, pivoted to the truck chassis at i1 engages behind an abutment j on shaft d, so locking the shaft until, when the platform is lowered, a stud k, secured either to the platform or to one of the movable guide channels, engages the lever and lifts it away from abutment j. Feet g1, g2 support the apparatus when the wheels are retracted.
