Abstract
797,729. Washers. DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT CO., Inc. Aug. 2, 1955, No. 22209/55. Class 89(1) A washer 10, Fig. 1, of plastically-deformable material, is reduced in height, as the bolt or other fastener 11 is tightened, to a predetermined extent, thereby indicating that the bolt is installed at a certain tension. The height reduction is measured, e.g. against a datum mark on an adjacent structure, or by a feeler, or by a caliper, since the reduction is accompanied by a specific increase in diameter. In a modification, the washer 16, Fig. 4 ,is surrounded by a ring 17, and when the bolt head is caused to abut the ring, the washer will be deformed to the required extent. The ring may be turned, e.g. by a handle projecting therefrom to enable an operator to feel when the head binds thereon. The washer and ring may be integrally joined together by an annular portion 19, Fig. 6, or may be secured by brazing or welding to an annular disc.
