Abstract

797,547. Moulding nibs for ball-point pens. D. C. B., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1956 [Aug. 30, 1955]. No. 24840/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XV and XXII] A method of forming a nib portion for a ballpoint pen comprises shaping molten nib material in a mould 1, Fig. 1, wherein the housing for the ball and ink passages in the interior of the nib are formed by the co-operation, within the mould, of a ball or spherical former 2 at the forward end of the nib cavity of the mould and a core pin 3 extending into the nib cavity, the core pin having a forward face 5 which has a configuration which is a counterpart of the ball or former 2, and channelling or grooving 6 formed in and extending across the forward face 5 of the core pin 3. The nib material may be a thermoplastic such as nylon. The resultant nib portion is shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and comprises an ink duct 10, and four radial ribs 7 extending from the wall of the ball housing and united in a central region to form a base seat for a writing ball 8. In a modification, the ribs are non- radical and are united in a central region to provide a buttressed webbing, an ink aperture being provided in the central region.
