Abstract

797,238. Indicating liquid levels. YORKSHIRE TAR DISTILLERS, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1956, No. 24307/56. Class 123(1) In apparatus for the gravity separation of liquids wherein the lowermost of the separated liquids is run off through a sight glass through which the appearance of the upper liquid is observed, the sight glass has opposed windows 3, 4 between which is clamped an open-ended tube 5, of transparent material housing a shorter glass tube 6 having flat end walls 7, 8. The wall 8 abuts the window 4 whilst the wall 7 is spaced about 1/8th of an inch away from the window 3. Cut-away portions 9 at one end of the tube 5 admit the liquid past the end wall 7. Light from a source behind the sight glass passes through the window 4, the end walls 7, 8, a thin layer of liquid and the window 3 to the observer, the thin layer allowing sufficient light to be transmitted through dark coloured or nearly opaque liquids to enable the interface between such liquids to be readily seen.
