Abstract

797,148. Packaging. ATLANTA PAPER CO. Jan. 4, 1956, No. 343/56. Class 94(1). Cans are packed in groups in an open-ended wrapper while moving continuously, the wrapper being placed flat on top of a group of cans, folded down on either side of the group, then folded underneath it to produce a lap. The lap is secured by tongue-and-slot or other means. Cans C advancing singly on a conveyer chain 101 are formed into a double row by means as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,752,027 and brought beneath a stack of wrappers 300. Suckers 302 and horizontally reciprocating swords 303, 304 separate the lowermost wrapper W and deposit it above the cans for forward transfer by chains 106 with dogs 107. Separating elements 128 on conveyer chains 125 and reciprocated at right angles to the direction of chain travel by cam bars 129 divide the cans into groups of six, and rotating folders 142 fold a wrapper about the sides of each group to depend beneath it. Further separators 144 similar to separators 128 retain the cans grouped during passage across folding means 152, 153 which folds parts 16, 18 of the wrapper into overlapping relation beneath the cans. The wrapped cans are received on belts 402 and a member 401, moving both horizontally and vertically, locks tongues 24<SP>1</SP> into slots 22 along the lap. During transit through the machine, belts 115 and 137 keep the wrapper in engagement with the cans, the belts 115, however, being deflected clear of the folders 142 by pulleys 117, 118, 120, 121. Microswitches 105, 108 stop the packaging in the absence of a can or wrapper, or in the event of improper positioning of the latter. The wrapper is as described in Specification 790,815.
