Abstract
796,848. Metal heating furnaces; skid rails. STEIN & ATKINSON, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1956], No. 4992/57. Class 51 (2). In a continuous billet heating furnace 41 formed with a heating section 42 fired by burners 44 and 46, and a soaking section 43 fired by burners 45, water-cooled skid rails 47 in said heating section 42 are disposed on water-cooled vertical supports 52 and transverse supports 51. In the soaking zone the rails pass through a refractory hearth 48 to a header 53, a similar header (not shown) being provided at the front of the furnace. Each rail comprises a pipe 27, Fig. 3, a wear strip or rail 61 welded thereto, and an alloy shield 62 wrapped loosely round the pipe. The shield is formed in sections attached to the pipe 27 by plug welds 64 in slots 65 on both sides of the wear strip 61. Alternatively, the plug welds may be replaced by studs, or a second shield may be disposed around the first, Fig. 4 (not shown). Variation in conditions along the furnace may be allowed for by building up a composite rail, Fig. 5, in which the first section 72 is assembled as above, a second section 73 comprises plastic refractory 75 applied between studs on the pipe 27, Fig. 6 (not shown), and a third section 74 comprises a silicon carbide sleeve 77 formed in halves with slots 80 engaging studs 78 on said pipe 27.
