Abstract

796,147. Laminated fabrics. FRIEDER, L. P. Aug. 7, 1954, No. 23012/54, Drawings to Specification. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] A laminated fabric for resisting penetration by projectiles includes a multiply fabric woven from highly-twisted continuous filament yarns of nylon, glass, or metal. The yarns are twisted, whilst restrained from shortening, until the filaments are stretched between 50 and 90 per cent of the extension at which they would break, the upper limit causing permanent elongation of the filaments. Fabric made from yarns twisted to the upper limit are more effective against sharp-nosed spinning projectiles, and fabrics made from less highly twisted yarns are more effective against shrapnel. The fabrics may have a metal coating sprayed on. Two of the above fabrics, one with maximum twist and one with less twist, may be sewn together, with a layer of soft material between them, in the manner of quilting; the soft material may be a fabric woven from soft-spun yarns.
