Abstract

795,604. Pipe joints. JAY, K. W. Nov. 2, 1956 [Nov. 7, 1955], No. 33526/56. Class 99(1). A flexible coupling allowing lateral and axial movement comprises a sleeve 11 within which fits a pipe end 10a of substantially less diameter having a flange 15 which co-operates with a flange 11b on the sleeve to limit axial movement, the pipe and the sleeve being connected by thin sheet metal seals 16. The sleeve has a flange 11a which as shown is secured to the wall of a vessel 13 by bolts 12, or, alternatively, the sleeve may constitute the end of another pipe. The seals 16 comprise U-shaped metal diaphragms which are furnace-brazed to the pipe end 10a and to the sleeve 11. The fluid pressure acts on the innermost diaphragm only but if this should fail the next is available to resist the pressure.
