The discharge gate of a skip in a guided skip hoist is hinged at its upper end 18, Fig. 2, so that it always lies within the plan area of the skip and so that its opening movement is in the direction of discharge of the material. As illus. trated, closure of the discharge aperture 5 is effected by an inner wall 3 carried by springs 4 from an outer wall 2 which connects lateral walls 1. The door is opened by links 6 joined by a shaft 8 carrying rollers 9 which engage in guides 10 on the skip and with guides 11, Fig. 4, in the shaft. The guides 11 direct the rollers 9 into engagement with guides 13 moved by a ram 14 to open the door which is closed either by return of the guides 13 or by an inclined portion of the fixed guides 11 as the skip is lowered. A surface 20, Fig. 2, guides the discharged material to the receiving hopper. In an alternative construction (Fig. 6, not shown) the links 6 are replaced by bell cranks pivoted to the skip and carrying at the outer ends of their arms rollers engaging a track on the door and a track on the skip.
