Abstract

795,077. Conduits. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Jan. 30, 1956-[June 6, 1955], No. 2876/56. Class 33. [Also in Group XXIX] A conduit, tank or like structure has an expansion joint in which a compressible member is disposed between abutting plates, a resilient sealing strip bridging the plates is left unattached to them adjacent their edges so that its effective length is increased and tensile forces on expansion reduced, and means are provided for keeping the member in position and the plates in alignment. The Figure shows part of a long open tank for heated liquids in which a vertical temperature gradient may exist ; the metal plates 3 and 6 forming the tank bottom are welded together at 6a and side plates 4, 5 and 7, 8 are provided with a compressible bar 16 of elastomeric material in gap 15, and with the resilient sealing strip 19 attached to linings 10 and 12 of the side plates 5 and 8 at its ends and spaced from the gap by a non-adherent strip 20. Co-operating plates 17 and 18 secured to the side plates maintain them in alignment, and further sealing strips 21 and 29 are provided to cover joints in the linings.
