Abstract

795,044. Releasable fastenings. MANNING, E. A. Sept. 21, 1956 [Nov. 4, 1955], No. 28995/56. Class 44 A toggle actuated mechanism for clamping two adjacent structures together comprises a first stationary member 15 associated with one of the structures, a first lever 19 pivotally mounted on the stationarymember, a second lever 23 pivotally connected to the first lever 19 remote from the pivotal mounting of the first lever, a second stationary member 27 fast with the other of the structures, means 25 associated with the second lever 23 for engagement with the second stationary member 27 for effecting the clamping, and an actuating handle 31 pivotally mounted, on the first lever 19 for movement angularly of the pivotal mounting and for limited movement in a direction longitudinally of the handle, means connecting the handle to the first lever when the handle is moved in one direction longitudinally thereof, and a projection associated with the first stationary member for limiting movement of the levers in the direction in which the toggle is overset. As shown for securing a panel 11 to an aircraft fuselage, the first lever 19 consists of a pair of plates which are pivoted on trunnions 18 secured to the member 15. The second lever 23 is pivoted on a pin 24 passing through the plates of the first lever 19. The handle 31 is pivoted on pins 30 extending inwardly of the plates, the pins engaging elongated slots 32 in the side walls of the handle. The latter is forend with cam surfaces 35 leading into notches 36, the arrangement being such that when the handle is moved for the pins 30 to be at the ends of the slots 32 adjacent the cam surfaces 35 a stud 38 carried by each of the plates of the lever 19 enters the notch 36, the handle then being moved by a spring 39 for the studs 38 to be fully engaged in the slots. The spring 39 is pivotally connected between the handle and a plate 42 pivoted to the lever 23. Angular movement of the lever 19 is limited by projections 48 on the member 15 which engage recesses 49 in the plates of the lever. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 3, depression of a latch 50 frees the handle from a spring loaded plunger 52 whereby the handle can then be moved towards the position shown in Fig. 4. During this movement the pins 30 are moved, against the spring 39, to the ends of the slots 32 adja- -cent the cam surfaces 35, after which the latter ride over the studs 38 and the handle is moved by the spring 39 for the notches 36 to engage over the studs. In this position, the handle is rigidly engaged with the lever 19. Movement of the handle back towards the position shown in Fig. 3 disengages the lever end 25 from the member 27, thus to free the panel 11. The panel is attached to the fuselage again by offering it up with the handle in this position, the handle then being moved to bring the pin 24 over-centre with respect to the trunnions 18. The handle is then moved longitudinally by the operator to disengage it from the lever 19 after which the handle is moved in a clockwise direction to its operative position in which it is locked by the plunger 52.
