Relates to a vehicle door fastening of the kind comprising a spring-loaded rotatable claw c to engage a peg on the complementary part of the fastening, a ratchet d secured to the claw c, a pawl g to hold the ratchet d against clockwise rotation, a pivotal release member operable from either side of the door for disengaging the pawl g from the ratchet d and a movable stop r operable from the inside of the door for preventing disengagement of the pawl g from the ratchet d by actuation of the release member from the outside of the door. According to the invention the release member is formed by a pair of pivotally interconnected and spring- loaded parts i and h, of which h is operable from the outside of the door while i is operable from the inside, the part i being adapted for engagement by the movable stop r and also being adapted to impart a release movement to the pawl g, the construction being such that when the stop r engages the part i operation of the part h from outside the door does not cause part i to release the pawl g. The parts h and i are pivoted to each other at o, the part i extending beyond the pivot o to form an arm q at one end and engaging a stump p on the pawl g at the other end. The ratchet d and the pawl g are pivotally mounted between plates a and b with the claw c rotating with the ratchet d on the far side of plate a. Part h of the release member is pivoted freely on the same pivot k as the pawl g, and is connected by a spring j to the part i so that when the flange m on the part h is pressed to the left by a push-button from outside the door the spring j draws the part i against the stump p on the pawl g to release the fastening against the restraint of a spring n. Similarly, if the arm q of part i is pushed downwards, by means associated with the inside of the vehicle, the pawl g is deflected. Actuation of the fastening from either side of the door is prevented by a stop r which can be moved to a position under the arm q where it directly blocks operation by means of the arm q and, by acting as a pivot for the part i as a whole, causes the lower end of part i to move away from the stump p when pressure is applied to the flange m on the part h by the push-button from outside the door.
