Abstract

794,804. Gear pumps; centrifugal pumps. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 16, 1956 [Nov. 18, 1955], No. 35190/56. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (2). [Also in Group XXIV] A fuel pump comprises a pair of similar gear pumps 13, 14 having their driving gears 31, 33 connected to a common drive shaft 64 by coupling sleeves 78 which are disposed in the clearance between the shaft 64 and the gears 31, 33. The splined portions of the sleeves 78 are hardened whilst the intermediate portions are weakened by holes 82. The shaft 64 also drives a centrifugal booster pump 11 which is provided with a series of by-pass ports 91 communicating with the gear pumps through a check valve 19. The gear pumps discharge into a common outlet manifold through separate valvecontrolled outlet ports, see Fig. 5 (not shown). The housing and covers of the gear pump are made of a high strength hardened iron whilst the steel bushings are lined with bronze.
