Abstract

832,776. Hydraulic transmissions. PAYNE, R. Oct. 10, 1957 [July 11, 19561, No. 21462/56. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic transmission for vehicles comprises a rotary abutment pump having several sections selectively connectible to a rotary abutment motor to give a plurality of gear ratios. A pump 1 comprises parts A, B, C, each of which has a vaned rotor 24 splined to a common sleeve 25 driven through epicyclic reduction gearing from an input shaft 26. Each rotor co-operates with two rotary abutments 30 which are geared to the sleeve 25 so that the pump has six sections, each section having an inlet channel 43 leading from a common chamber 48, and a discharge channel 44 from which liquid can discharge either through a non-return valve 44<SP>1</SP> to a common chamber 49 or to a by-pass chamber 50 through a valve 52 operable by a cam 55 on a common cam-shaft 56. Chambers 48, 49 are connected through a reversing valve 57 to lines 3, 4 connected to a motor 5. Two motors may be provided, each connected to an output shaft to form an hydraulic differential, or one motor may be provided, in which case it can be formed with the pump as a self-contained assembly. A valve 24<SP>1</SP> is provided for bypassing the motor to allow free wheeling. A shock absorbing device 70 is connected between the lines 3, 4, and the lines are also connected, through a change-over valve 68 to a tank 59 to supply replenishing liquid and maintain a minimum pressure in the lowpressure line. The air space of the tank is connected to the induction manifold of the engine to maintain a degree of vacuum to prevent aeration. For cooling, part of the liquid in the return line may be passed through a radiator the inlet and outlet of which are both connected through change-over valves to the lines 3, 4. To increase the number of gear ratios available the pump sections may have different capacities. In a modification a pump is provided which has five ports, each part comprising a rotor co-operating with a single rotary abutment.
