Abstract

794,712. Lubricating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 28, 1956 [Dec. 28, 1955], No. 39481/56. Class 12 (3). A rotatable shaft 2 is lubricated at a predetermined rate and without loss of lubricant to the atmosphere from a collapsible oilresistant reservoir 11 through a flow control means, for example, a porous rod 7 of carbon, &c. which is disposed between the interior of the reservoir and the surface of the shaft. The reservoir 11 is made of, for example, polyethylene or synthetic rubber, and the rod 7, which passes through a hole 6 in the bearing sleeve 4, is provided with a non-porous coating 9. To obviate undue wear of the rod 7 or shaft 2 a small amount of absorbent material, such as felt, may be inserted between the rod and the shaft, and a spring 15, disposed between the reservoir 11 and a housing 1 surrounding the bearing, may be used to assist in collapsing the reservoir as the lubricant is removed. The non- porous coating 9 may be dispensed with, in which case lateral loss of lubricant is prevented by elongating the reservoir neck 26, Fig. 4, to a point within the sleeve 4.
