Abstract

794,670. Light refractors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 1, 1956 '[May 20, 1955], No. 14642/55. Class 75(2) In a transparent refractor member of the kind having the form of part or whole of a surface of revolution, carrying light directing elements in radial planes containing the axis of revolution and designed to produce from an azimuthally symmetrical light distribution from a light source S on the axis and emergent light distribution which is azimuthally asymmetrical having a maximum intensity in a preferred radial plane Pl and falling off in intensity on either side thereof without discontinuities, the light directing members consist of elements which spread the light without changing its mean direction and extend over an azimuthal angle of at least sixty degrees on each side of the preferred radial plane P1, the angle of spread being least for the elements near the preferred plane P1 and increasing with increase of azimuthal angle therefrom. The refractor member shown is of bowl shape having frustoconical sides and the light directing elements are flutes arranged in two sets svmmetrical about the diametral plane X-X, each set containing seven groups 1...7 and each group having flutes of the same angle of spread. The angle of spread of the flutes of a group is determined in accordance with the formula D = 2 f# where f is not greater than unit y and # is the azimuth angle for the central flute of the group measured from the preferred plane P1. The angular width of a group does not exceed #/f where # is the angle subtended at the centre of the group by the light source. The flutes may be replaced by prisms positioned so that the incident rays are divided equally on the two working faces of the prisms. The flutes or prisms may be on the inside or the outside of the bowl. The surface opposite the flutes or prisms may have parallel rows of prisms in planes perpendicular to the axis of revolution of the bowl. Specification 424,800 is referred to.
