793,175. Variable resistances. ENGEL & GIBBS, Ltd. June 25, 1954 [July 17, 1953], No. 13592/56. Divided out of 793,173, [Group XXXVII]. Class 37. A variable resistor comprises a sealed envelope through which a pair of spaced rods extend, one forming an electrode from which contact is made with a resistance wire wound on the other rod via a conductive liquid which can move in the envelope to control the value of resistance. The Figure shows a variable resistor comprising a glass tube 11 provided with a rod electrode 12 and a second rod 14 of insulating material on which a resistance wire 15 is wound, the end of the wire being connected to a terminal 16. A quantity of conductive liquid 18 such as mercury, or an amalgam of mercury and thallium, as described in Specification 793,174, [Group XXXVII], makes contact between electrode 12 and resistance wire 15. When tube 11 is tilted the liquid 12 moves along the tube and thus varies the resistance between rod 12 and terminal 16. The tube 11 may have one half throughout the length of its inner surface roughened or ground, Fig. 2 (not shown).
