Abstract

793,036. Packaging. RADO, L. May 12, 1954 [May 15, 1953], No. 13686/53. Addition to 599,174. Class 94(1). In an improvement in the process described and claimed in the parent Specification, at least those parts of the thermoplastic tubing which are to be welded are covered with sheets of non- thermoplastic material, such as paper or metal foil, to prevent adhesion between the welding tools and the tubing. If sheets of metal foil are used they are permanently secured to the welded areas of the tubing. The packages shown in Figs. 3 and 4 are produced by feeding a filled thermoplastic tubing 1 between opposed pressing and welding tools 6, 7, Fig. 5, operating as described in the parent Specification, webs 3, 3a of non-thermoplastic sheet material, e.g., paper, being fed from supply rolls between the tools and the upper and lower surfaces of the tubing. The paper webs adhere to the welded areas of the tubing and form a loose covering for the containers produced by the successive pressing and welding operations. Windows 5 may be provided in the covering sheets or they may be perforated along transverse lines 4 so that the loose parts thereof may be torn away. The paper webs may carry a thermoplastic ink which is transferred to the flattened areas of the tubing during the welding operation. In this case, the paper covering is removed from the welded areas after cooling.
