Abstract

963,144. Paper and like bags. BRITISH XYLONITE Ltd. Nov. 1, 1960 [Nov. 19, 1959; Aug. 17, 1960], Nos. 39283/59 and 28515/60. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] In a method of producing a package charged with a flowable material, a length of heat sealable tube is heat sealed at one end, is held at the other end while the bottom of bag so formed is blocked out by a gas blast through the open end, is charged with its content and is closed at the other end. A tube formed by folding and longitudinally seaming a web around a mandrel or by direct extrusion from a die is fed intermittently through a cutting device. The tube is gripped by jaws 6, 7 and a bag length is cut off. The tube is then transferred by the jaws to a pair of heater jaws 10 which seal the bottom of the tube. An anvil bar 11 is inserted into the bag and a tool 12 co-operating with the bar punches a weakening line 14 in the bag wall. A pipe 15 is inserted in the open top of the package and a sterilizing or neutral gas, e.g. nitrogen is blown in to distend the bag to block out the bottom, this being assisted by an external plate applied to the underside of the bag. A triangular filling nozzle 20 is then inserted and after removal of the nozzle the bag is closed by heating jaws 22 and finally a tab 23 is adhered over the weakening 14. The heated jaws may be replaced by a highfrequency welding device or sealed by flamefusing the material. The weakening may have been previously impressed in the bag blank and printing may be carried out on the parent stock, the blanks, or the packages. As an alternative the top of the bag may be sealed and the filling may take place through a perforation or slit in the wall, this being closed by a covering tab. The top of the package may be closed by an externally applied strip of paper or metal foil, this being secured by adhesive to replace the heat seal formed by the jaws 22.
